Saturday Session II

Weather uncertainty is one of the current greatest challenges facing farmers. The Rodale Institute’s 36-year old Farming Systems Trial® (FST) compares two organic and one conventional grain cropping systems, and has proven that organic systems are more resilient under both flood and drought conditions. Learn how diverse soil biological activities using soil organisms as “ecosystem engineers” enhance soil health and allow better management of water and nutrients.

Kristine Nichols is the chief scientist at Rodale Institute and oversees research trials on organic agriculture, including FST. Prior to joining Rodale, she was a research soil microbiologist with USDA-ARS for 11 years.
