Extend the Grazing Season with a Forage Chain

Workshop audio recordings from the 2014 MOSES Organic Farming Conference.

Laura Paine, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, Paine Family Farm
Friday I – 8:30 a.m.
This workshop will introduce the concept of the forage chain, a risk management strategy to diversify grazing forages seasonally to gain yield, quality, and most importantly—grazing days. The more days your animals can harvest their own forage, the less your cost of production. Learn about perennial and annual pasture species, sequencing annual and perennial forages across the year, and stockpiling perennial forages. The session will include an interactive segment in which audience members will be encouraged to share their experiences with extending the grazing season.
