Whole grain flaxseed is primarily used as a supplemental source of fat in dairy rations aiming to improve energy supply to cows while modifying the fatty acid profile of milk towards more production of omega-3 and CLAs. Flaxseed meal, the leftover residue after oil extraction, is rich in protein and its use in organic dairy diets is growing. This workshop will discuss the pros and cons of feeding flaxseed in your farm. Specifically, the impact of flaxseed on milk production and composition, feed efficiency, nutrient digestibility, and methane emissions will be discussed. Profitability of feeding flaxseed will be also addressed.
