Get Started in Native Seed Production

Workshop audio recordings from the 2014 MOSES Organic Farming Conference.

Eric Lee-Mader, Xerces Society
Saturday I – 8:30 a.m.
Native grass and wildflower seed are high value alternative crops that can be produced at multiple scales. The markets for these crops can range from existing native seed companies, to conservation agencies, to native plant gardeners, and more. In this introductory-level session, the Xerces Society’s Eric Lee-Mader will cover the basics of getting started with native seed crops, including sourcing foundation seed, establishing production fields, managing crop health, harvesting and seed cleaning, and marketing your crop. Concepts will be illustrated by examples from Eric’s work as a native seed crop consultant, and from ongoing work by the Xerces Society in producing native seed for wildlife conservation programs.
