Movable High Tunnels

Workshop audio recording from the 2017 MOSES Organic Farming Conference.

Collin Thompson and Ryan Pesch
Saturday Session I

High tunnels have proven to be a valuable asset to growers around the world, extending the season, providing environmental protection, and increasing product quality. Movable tunnels take this a step further by taking a plant-positive approach to season extension. This session will cover structural options, crop selection, production strategies, and financial considerations of movable high tunnels.

Collin Thompson manages Michigan State University North Farm, where he explores strategies for growing vegetables year-round in areas that can get more than 10 feet of snow. Before that, he worked for Four Seasons Tools, a high tunnel manufacturer.

Ryan Pesch and his wife own and operate Lida Farm, a certified organic vegetable operation in western Minnesota. They market vegetables via a year-round CSA, farmers’ market, and farm stands. They recently completed a “deep winter” greenhouse. Ryan also is an extension educator.
