Workshop audio recording from the 2017 MOSES Organic Farming Conference.

Laura Frerichs and John Hendrickson
Saturday Session II

The packing shed is a central pivot point on the vegetable farm. Not only is a highly functioning pack house a critical point in terms of profitability, produce quality is dependent on an efficient washing and packing set-up. Learn how to remove bottlenecks, and improve ergonomics and work flow in your packing house as we look at pack house layout, management, and tools to maximize productivity.

Laura Frerichs and her husband own and operate Loon Organics, a 40-acre certified organic vegetable farm in Hutchinson, Minn. They cultivate eight acres for a 200-member CSA, the Mill City Farmers’ Market in Minneapolis, select farm-to-table restaurants, food co-ops, and The Food Group’s “Harvest for the Hungry” Program.

John Hendrickson teaches and conducts research on specialty crops for the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also manages his own certified organic vegetable farm near Waterloo, Wis., and has been farming since 1999.
