Reduce Tillage in Organic Vegetables

Workshop audio recording from the 2017 MOSES Organic Farming Conference.

Saturday Session II

See how strip tillage in rolled, crimped or mowed cereal rye compares to a tilled production system. We’ll look at soil aggregate stability, potentially mineralizable nitrogen, active soil carbon, and microbial activity improvements. Learn how effective cover crop management, crop selection, and soil fertility management techniques mitigate yield-limiting factors to produce high quality vegetable crops.

Ajay Nair is in the horticulture department at Iowa State University, focusing on cover cropping, conservation tillage, nutrient management, soil amendments and health, and season extension strategies in vegetable production. He also works on production and techniques needed to meet the rising demand for locally grown produce.
