Cover crops provide a variety of ecosystem services including erosion protection, soil building, nitrogen sourcing and scavenging, and weed, disease and pest management. An increasing number of cover crops are being considered to provide specific environmental and agronomic services to cropping systems. The benefits and challenges that different cover crop species provide in organic field crop rotations will be explored. Resources to assist selection of cover crops in organic field crop rotations will be presented including the Midwest Cover Crops Council website, listserv, web-based decision tool and field guide.
